The Urban Room in Action: Two films one by the Urban Room Network was a simple explainer, making clear the intention of an Urban Room as a place where every town and city can explore its past, present and future. The second film was a personal pledge for a Placemaking manifesto, arguing that if placemaking came first the problems of urban development would have structure and purpose and a natural hierarchy.

Seen as a whole, What If? was both exhibition and manifesto. The explanatory boards helped visitors understand that this was not a display of finished ideas but an invitation to think together. It was Kingston’s Urban Room brought to life, a prototype for what a permanent space for civic conversation might one day become.

For one thoughtful week, Kingston had exactly what the Farrell Review once called for: a public room for public conversation, where the town’s past, present and imagined futures shared the same space.
